Examiner: What we know so-far about the ‘The Hunger Games’ movie sequel, ‘Catching Fire’

Fans of The Hunger Games series rejoiced Monday when Lionsgate announced it would be releasing the second movie in the franchise, Catching Fire, on November 22, 2013.

As the excitement over this news settles, fans want to know more — and of course, Lionsgate isn’t saying anything quite yet.

Most fans assume the cast will return for the second movie — which seems likely, but isn’t guaranteed. Details about their contracts are not known, but it is common for studios to sign cast members to multiple movies at once when creating potential film franchises. Still, there’s always the slight possibility a role could be recast.

Fans will also soon likely begin campaiging for their favorite choices for new characters introduced in Catching Fire, prime among them Finnick Odair, the tribute from District 4, as well as the other tributes introduced in the Quarter Quell.

It’s also uncertain if Gary Ross will return as director. As with many franchises, such as Harry Potter and The Twilight Saga, directors change hand between movies.

All three books in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins were among some of 2010′s best sellers in children’s fiction.

According to numbers newly released by Publisher’s Weekly, Mockingjay had the number four best sales out of last year’s new hardcovers in children’s and young adult titles. Scholastic reported that Mockingjay sold 1,493,654 physical copies. Mockingjay also ranked high for e-book sales, ranking fourth with 124,845 copies sold.

The other books in the series also did well in e-book sales. The Hunger Games sold 128,604 e-books last year, coming in second only to Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Catching Fire, the second book in Collins’ trilogy, was the number seven e-book in children’s & young adult, selling 98,541 copies.

When it comes to physical books sold, the series did even better. The Hunger Games sold well over 1,000,000 copies in paperback. Catching Fire sold 918,821 copies in hardcover backlist.

The success of all three Hunger Games books in 2010 follows a trend in children’s and young adult literature, with multi-book series remaining some of the most popular titles.
