Examiner: ’Bumped’ by Megan McCafferty, new dystopian YA for ’Hunger Games’ fans in stores

Posted by amanda in Apr 26, 2011 with No Comments

Fans of The Hunger Games are continuously looking for new books in the dystopian genre to keep them satisfied, now that Suzanne Collins’ series is finished.

Fortunately for readers, publishers are eager to put out new YA dystopian titles frequently these days — including one of today’s new releases, Bumped by Megan McCafferty.

Published by Balzer + Bray (an imprint of Harper Collins), Bumped is a different type of story to hit the YA dystopian shelves. McCafferty actually drew her inspiration from current headlines and pop culture trends about teen pregnancies.

Kirkus calls it a “well-realized dystopia” and Publisher’s Weekly calls it both “uncomfortable” and “scandalous.”

Here is the book’s official synopsis:

Examiner: ’The Hunger Games’ among 2010’s most challenged library books

Posted by amanda in Apr 11, 2011 with No Comments

For the first time, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games has made the American Library Association’s top ten list of most challenged books — landing at number 5 on this year’s list.

Though fans of The Hunger Games fans may find this shocking, it’s not so surprising to Collins herself.

“I’ve read in passing that people were concerned about the level of violence in the books,” Collins has said. “That’s not unreasonable. They are violent. It’s a war trilogy.”

It’s also become something of a badge of honor for many authors and publishers to have their books added to this list. In the past, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books have also been named on the list, along with perennially challenged classics such as Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Posted by amanda in Mar 21, 2011 with No Comments

All three books in The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins were among some of 2010′s best sellers in children’s fiction.

According to numbers newly released by Publisher’s Weekly, Mockingjay had the number four best sales out of last year’s new hardcovers in children’s and young adult titles. Scholastic reported that Mockingjay sold 1,493,654 physical copies. Mockingjay also ranked high for e-book sales, ranking fourth with 124,845 copies sold.

The other books in the series also did well in e-book sales. The Hunger Games sold 128,604 e-books last year, coming in second only to Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. Catching Fire, the second book in Collins’ trilogy, was the number seven e-book in children’s & young adult, selling 98,541 copies.

When it comes to physical books sold, the series did even better. The Hunger Games sold well over 1,000,000 copies in paperback. Catching Fire sold 918,821 copies in hardcover backlist.

The success of all three Hunger Games books in 2010 follows a trend in children’s and young adult literature, with multi-book series remaining some of the most popular titles.
