HollyWood Reporter: ‘Hunger Games’: Elizabeth Banks Picks Team Peeta Because of ‘The Way He Loves Katniss So Deeply’

Posted by amanda in Mar 23, 2012 with No Comments

The cultural frenzy over Hunger Games, opening on Friday, is hitting new heights.

Hunger Games star Elizabeth Banks — fresh off the film’s European press tour — was the special guest at last night’s Slate.com Culture Gabfest, a podcast now up on the site. The March 20 event was presented in partnership with Zocalo Public Square and held at the Petersen Car Museum on Wilshire Blvd.

After lively discussions between three dazzlingly smart, facile and amusing Slate editors (Julia Turner, Dana Stevens, Stephen Metcalf) about the controversy over Mike Daisey’s Apple computer expose on NPR, proven to be filled with lies, and the merits of the manic pixie girlfriend feminine archetype symbolized by Zoey Deschanel on The New Girl, Banks was brought onstage to answer questions about her hotly anticipated new Lionsgate film.

Posted by amanda in Jan 11, 2012 with No Comments

Elizabeth Banks has said that she is really excited for fans to see her portrayal of Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games.

The 30 Rock actress revealed that she did not feel nervous about playing a character from a beloved book series, adding that she is looking forward to seeing the finished product.

“I’m really excited about my portrayal,” Banks told Vulture. “I like the voice – I worked really hard on the voice.

“The hair and make-up didn’t happen immediately. It was a couple days of playing and tweaking, and she really kind of suddenly appeared to us. If I could remove myself from the situation, I would be really excited by my portrayal of Effie.”

The 37-year-old went on to say that she is not afraid to face criticism from fans of the book series by Suzanne Collins.

Posted by amanda in Jan 10, 2012 with No Comments

With Hunger Games‘ premiere only a few months away, the internet has been buzzing with speculations of how Katniss and Peeta’s journey into the arena will unfold. Luckily for us, Elizabeth Banks, who plays the bubbly District 12 escort Effie Trinket, has been dropping us little hints here and there about the highly anticipated film.

Celebuzz recently caught up with the busy actress to chat about her role in Hunger Games. Banks not only told us how Effie’s creation all went down, but she also dished how the movie will fair compared to the beloved novels.

“It’s a really faithful adaptation of the books,” Banks told us. “I think if you’ve read the books, you’re going to be really pleased because we don’t deviated that much from The Hunger Games.”

“The great thing about working on these films is that all the collaborators are amazing. [Director] Gary Ross is Academy Award nominated. The hair and make-up team is Academy Award nominated. The costume designer is Academy Award nominated,” she added. “Everyone I collaborated with in creating Effie is pretty good at their jobs. They’re top notch people and I think we came up with an amazing Effie.”

EW: ‘Hunger Games’: Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket — EXCLUSIVE PHOTO

Posted by amanda in Oct 27, 2011 with No Comments

In another canny move to whet the appetites of Suzanne Collins’ rabid fans, Lionsgate will release a series of posters featuring the major characters from their feverishly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games on Friday. Until then, EW has the exclusive first look at Elizabeth Banks in all the garish splendor of Effie Trinket. (See it after the jump!) Pink wig, possibly askew? Check! A feverish glint in Banks’ eye betraying Effie’s otherwise officious manner. Check!

For the uninitiated, Effie is series heroine Katniss Everdeen and her District 12 counterpart Peeta Mellark’s tinny and willfully oblivious handler as they navigate the reaping and Capitol. “Happy Hunger Games!” she cries out happily to the crowd of terrified children awaiting to hear who gets sent off to fight for their lives in the Arena. “And may the odds be ever in your favor!”

The Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence is making more and more headlines these days, as the March 23rd release of the movie gets closer and closer. And now she’s featured in the number one spot on Men’s Health magazine’s “101 Hottest Women of 2011″ issue.

“We freely admit there aren’t many women who could turn us on while covered head to toe in blue paint—it’s just not our thing—and fewer still who could arouse us with little more than a bow and arrow,” writes Men’s Health, “yet 20-year old Oscar-nominee Lawrence does both as Mystique in X-Men: First Class and as Katniss Everdeen in next year’s hotly-anticipated Hunger Games.”

Digital Spy: Elizabeth Banks: Hunger Games Effie role suits me

Posted by amanda in Aug 27, 2011 with No Comments

The actress, who will play Effie Trinket in the upcoming adaptation of Suzanne Collinss young adult dystopian trilogy, said that the character represents some of the plots most important elements. “There is no-one else for me to play! And also, shes so suited to me. Shes funny, shes a little comic relief, shes a little kooky, shes a little dark. All those things really attracted me to her,” Banks explained in an interview with Parade. “She represents the Capitol. She understands the stakes of the game but she also understands the stakes for her. Shes one of the few glimpses of the totalitarian regime. Shes living the high life in the Capitol.”

Parade: Elizabeth Banks ‘I Don’t Think I Will Win Emmy’

Posted by amanda in Aug 26, 2011 with No Comments

Were you always a Hunger Games fan?

“I was one of the first readers of the book. I produce movies and I was looking at a similar book when the publisher recommended I read The Hunger Games. I loved it, devoured it, and then devoured Catching Fire. Then I had to wait a year for Mockingjay, which I pre-ordered from Amazon. I was really invested in the books from the get-go and had worked for Gary Ross before. So when he got the job I just emailed everybody and was like, ‘I really want to play Effie Trinket. Just know that I am out here and if you need someone, I can step in.”

Why Effie?

“There is no one else for me to play! And also, she’s so suited to me. She’s funny, she’s a little comic relief, she’s a little kooky, she’s a little dark. All those things really attracted me to her. She represents the Capitol. She understands the stakes of the game but she also understands the stakes for her. She’s one of the few glimpses of the totalitarian regime. She’s living the high life in the Capitol.”

Is the movie going to be very loyal to the books?

“I think the fans will be extremely happy, that’s all I can say. There is definitely pressure to deliver but I feel so good because we’re making a movie that is super-entertaining but thought-provoking and that’s what actors live for. It’s great.”
