Examiner: Josh Hutcherson is Peeta & Liam Hemsworth is Gale in ’The Hunger Games’ movie

Posted by amanda in Apr 04, 2011 with No Comments

It’s official — Lionsgate announced today that it has cast Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale in The Hunger Games movie.

News came out over the weekend that the two actors were frontrunners for the role, but on Monday Lionsgate confirmed to The Hunger Games Examiner that the casting was official.

Hutcherson and Hemsworth will star opposite Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss in The Hunger Games, due in theaters on March 23, 2012.

Hutcherson and Hemsworth were not the first choices of many fans (who preferred Hunter Parrish as Peeta and Drew Roy as Gale, in multiple online surveys) — but Gary Ross and producers at Lionsgate clearly saw something in the audition process that swayed their decision.

The Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins was heavily involved in the audition process for Katniss, and has complete faith in Lawrence. Fans should hope that Collins feels equally strongly about Hutcherson and Hemsworth as Peeta and Gale, respectively.

Examiner: Fans choose Hunter Parrish, Drew Roy for Peeta & Gale in ’The Hunger Games’

Posted by amanda in Apr 04, 2011 with No Comments

Lionsgate may be leaning towards Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth to play Peeta and Gale, respectively, in The Hunger Games movie — but fans have made it pretty clear they have some other choices in mind.In a recent poll from fan site Down With The Capitol, fans overwhelmingly voted for Hunter Parrish to play Peeta, and for Drew Roy to play Gale.In fact, 61% chose Parrish as Peeta. The closest runner up was Lucas Till with 24%. Hutcherson, the alleged frontrunner for Peeta, drew only 8% of the vote.In the voting for Gale, 60% of fans wanted Roy to play Gale, with alleged frontrunner Hemsworth drawing only 16% of the vote. However, the results from a poll on MTVs Hollywood Crush blog were decidedly different. At MTV, Hutcherson had over 43% of the vote — the most of any Peeta contender. However, Parrish was a close second with over 31% of the vote.AdvertisementFor Gale, Hollywood Crushers chose Roy as their number one choice, awarding him over 35% of the vote. Hemsworth had only about 11% of the vote there. No matter what fans say in any poll or blog comment, the decision ultimately rests with Lionsgate — and its up to fans to trust the studio to make the right choice, based on auditions and on-screen chemistry with actress Jennifer Lawrence, who will be portraying Katniss in The Hunger Games movie.Meanwhile, its possible an official announcement about casting for Peeta and Gale could come as soon as this week.

Deadline: Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson Inching Close To ‘Hunger Games’ Leads?

Posted by amanda in Apr 01, 2011 with No Comments

EXCLUSIVE: Casting for the male leads on The Hunger Games isn’t complete. I’m hearing that at the moment, Liam Hemsworth is frontrunner for the role of Gale Hawthorne, and that Josh Hutcherson is in the same position for the role of Peeta Mellark. In the Gary Ross-directed adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel trilogy, Gale is the hunting partner of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), and Peeta Mellark is the baker’s son chosen to accompany her as the district’s entry into the deadly Hunger Games reality show competition. Both have been hotly contested roles among young actors, as was Katniss before Lawrence got the job. Both of these guys look rights for the respective parts. Per Lionsgate, no offers have yet been made, and nothing is definitive.

Hollywood Reporter: Lionsgate Testing Actors Today to Star in ‘Hunger Games’ Opposite Jennifer Lawrence (Exclusive)

Posted by amanda in Mar 25, 2011 with No Comments

I hope this means we are getting closer to announcing an answer :)

Now that Lionsgate and Hunger Games director Gary Ross have the role of Katniss Everdeen all sewn up in the form of Jennifer Lawrence, the next task is casting the role of the male love interest, Peeta, plus Gale, the third point of a possible love triangle. Testing is taking place today, with some of Hollywood’s hottest rising actors in the mix.

The story is set in a future America which is divided into 12 poor districts that serve a wealthy Capitol territory. Once a year, each district submits a girl and boy as tributes to participate in life-or-death games. Sixteen-year old Katniss is the girl who volunteers to take the place of her sister; Peeta is a boy from Katniss’ town also selected for the games who, during the opening ceremony, reveals his unrequited love for her. Katniss spends the rest of the story unsure whether the move was a survival ploy or a true act. The Gale character teaches Katniss the way of the hunter and plays a bigger role in the subsequent trilogy.

Testing for the Peeta role is taking place today and, according to insiders, here are the contenders:

Josh Hutcherson (pictured, right): A Hollywood vet at 18 years old, he starred with Brendan Fraser in Journey to the Center of the Earth and toplines the sequel later this year. He established indie cred last year by appearing in the critical hit The Kids Are All Right. (ICM, The Beddingfield Company)

Alexander Ludwig (top left corner, above): the 19-year old Canadian starred in 2009′s Escape to Witch Mountain as well as 2007′s The Seeker: The Dark is Rising. (ICM)

Hunter Parish (bottom right corner, above): the 23-year old starred in Broadway’s Tony-winning musical Spring Awakening and now is one of the stars of Showtime’s Weeds. (WME, Management 360)

Lukas Pill (top right corner, above): The 20-year old is having quite a year: He is currently on screen in Battle: Los Angeles and plays Havok in May’s X-Men: First Class. (APA, Luber Roklin Entertainment)

Evan Peters (bottom left corner, above): The 24-year old may be best known to the geek-set for playing one of Aaron Johnson’s best friends in Kick-Ass. He recurred on a recent season of One Tree Hill and has been working plenty in TV, with recent credits including The Office, The Mentalist and Parenthood. (Gersh, Luber Rokin Entertainment)

For Gale, sources say the list includes, but is not limited to:

Liam Hemsworth, who is best known for starring opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song.

David Henrie — One of the stars of Wizards of Waverly Place and a regular on How I Met Your Mother. Set to star in the CBS pilot for The Assistants.

Robbie Amell –starred as Fred in the recent straight-to-DVD Scooby Doo! movies and was one of the stars of Nickelodeon’s True Jackson, VP.

Drew Roy, a Disney Channel and ABC Family actor (Hannah Montana, Greek) who is one of the stars of TNT’s high-profile sci-fi series Falling Skies.

EW: ‘Hunger Games’: Katniss is cast, who should play Peeta?

Well, that’s that. Now that Jennifer Lawrence (pictured) has been officially announced as the actress to play Katniss in The Hunger Games movie, we can all calm down and just wait patiently for the movie to come out. Right? Nope. Now we get to fret and ponder and postulate about who will play the whole slew of additional characters. Clearly, the most pressing of those characters are Gale and Peeta, the other two love-triangle sides to Katniss’ love hypotenuse.

For Peeta, Katniss’ Games partner and pretend (or is it real?) love interest, a few names have been floating around the entertain-o-sphere. The two strongest contenders at this point appear to be Weeds kid Hunter Parrish (above left) and The Kids Are All Right star, and Spider-Man hopeful, Josh Hutcherson (above right). While Hutcherson doesn’t have the natural hair color of the tow-headed Peeta, the casting of Lawrence demonstrates that it probably wouldn’t really be that much of a hurdle for producers. I Am Number Four star Alex Pettyfer has also been bandied about as a possible Peeta, which would certainly continue the trend of casting someone older than the characters’ teenage years. For Gale, there’s been a bit less speculation. Since he is supposed to be a few years older than the other two, there’s probably some more leeway in terms of the actual age of the actor they cast. A long, long time ago (in Internet time at least) we suggested Ben Barnes for the role, a suggestion I think might actually still be pretty good, though the reader pick we got was Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal Rising).

Who do you think should play these roles? Did the casting of Jennifer Lawrence force you to rethink your opinion? And who’s going to end up playing Haymitch, Rue, Prim, Effie, President Snow, Cato, Thresh, Buttercup, and District Villager #2?

E!: Let’s Cast The Hunger Games! Who Should Play Gale Hawthorne?

Posted by amanda in Mar 09, 2011 with No Comments

We’re expecting an announcement soon from Lionsgate about which actress will land the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

Monday we asked if you all thought Alex Pettyfer (who says he now has the script) was really best to play the role of Peeta, and now we’re curious as to whom you all would pick as Gale Hawthorne…

Gale, who has olive skin, black hair and gray eyes is Katniss’ best friend.

Whoever they cast as Katniss will clearly impact who they cast as Gale, considering the two need to look like they can be related, even though they’re not (totally cool plotline…read the book!).

Like all young-adult trilogies, there has to be a three-way love story, and in this one, Gale has a crush on Katniss and is not too fond of Peeta, like at all.
