MTV Movie News:Emily Browning Talks Auditioning For ‘Hunger Games’

Posted by amanda in Mar 21, 2011 with No Comments

The role might have recently gone to Jennifer Lawrence, but there was a point in time when “Sucker Punch” star Emily Browning might have played District 12 champion Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming Lionsgate adaptation of “The Hunger Games.”

“I read for ['Hunger Games'] a couple of times, but I’ve never read the book, to be honest — which I know is terrible of me,” Browning said in an interview with the Playlist. “I was nervous about it.”

Despite the fact Browning started out her acting career as one of the leads in an adaptation of a popular children’s series, it was that experience that turned her off from moving on to starring in the young-adult genre. She admitted that there was a period of time between when she filmed 2004′s “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” and when she agreed to come onboard Friday’s “Sucker Punch” that she seriously considered quitting acting altogether.

It was during that time that she found out “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer said she would be the perfect Bella Swan for the upcoming adaptation of the novel, but Browning wasn’t ready to commit to a franchise.

“I was just exhausted, and I was like, ‘I’m sorry, but I just can’t sign onto a trilogy right now,’ ” Browning told MTV News in 2009, after she finished “The Uninvited.” “To be honest, if I had gone on to do the film straight after ‘The Uninvited,’ I would not have been a good Bella . and I’m hoping people realize that now.”

But it was the fact that she was vilified for reportedly turning down the “Twilight” role that caused Browning to remain so hush-hush about trying out for “Hunger Games.”

MTV: ‘Hunger Games’: We Imagine What Jennifer Lawrence Will Look Like As Katniss!

Posted by amanda in Mar 21, 2011 with No Comments

Sure, Jennifer Lawrence may not have been born with dark locks or olive skin, but that doesn’t mean a little movie magic (or box of Clairol) can’t transform her into District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen. (I mean, Alex Pettyfer doesn’t actually have a face-full of scars nor does Robert Pattinson’s skin sparkle in the sun—that we know of). Yet, maybe you’re still having a hard time picturing the 20-year-old as the strong-willed heroine of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian trilogy. Well, struggle no more because we have a sneak peek of what Jennifer could look like as Katniss in the film adaptation of “The Hunger Games.”

We asked “THG” fan and artist Kate Wheeler of Rat Girl Studios to illustrate Jennifer in five of Katniss’ signature outfits (designed in the novel by her stylist Cinna): her reaping dress, her presentation costume, her interview dress, her Hunger Games uniform and her simple, gold dress. And all we can say is, we’re sold! Click play on the video after the jump to see all five outfits!

EW: ‘Hunger Games’ author Suzanne Collins talks Jennifer Lawrence

Posted by amanda in Mar 21, 2011 with No Comments

Fans are still buzzing over last week’s news that Jennifer Lawrence has been cast as Katniss Everdeen in the film version of The Hunger Games. EW has received an exclusive statement by Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins on Lawrence’s casting. The complete text of the statement follows:

Dear Readers,

We have found Katniss.

As the author, I went into the casting process with a certain degree of trepidation. Believing your heroine can make the leap from the relative safety of the page to the flesh and bones reality of the screen is something of a creative act of faith. But after watching dozens of auditions by a group of very fine young actresses, I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book.  And I’m thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role.

In her remarkable audition piece, I watched Jennifer embody every essential quality necessary to play Katniss. I saw a girl who has the potential rage to send an arrow into the Gamemakers and the protectiveness to make Rue her ally. Who has conquered both Peeta and Gale’s hearts even though she’s done her best to wall herself off emotionally from anything that would lead to romance. Most of all, I believed that this was a girl who could hold out that handful of berries and incite the beaten down districts of Panem to rebel. I think that was the essential question for me. Could she believably inspire a rebellion? Did she project the strength, defiance and intellect you would need to follow her into certain war? For me, she did.

Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this amazing for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.

Thank you all for sharing in this journey and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Love,

Suzanne Collins

Examiner: Jennifer Lawrence speaks out about playing Katniss in ’The Hunger Games’ movie

Posted by amanda in Mar 18, 2011 with No Comments

The Hunger Games fandom has been in a buzz since the Thursday announcement that Jennifer Lawrence had, indeed, signed on to portray Katniss in the upcoming movie adaptation.

“I couldn’t be happier about being a part of ‘Hunger Games’ and to play Katniss,” Lawrence said in a statement to The Hob. “I have a huge responsibility to the fans of this incredible book and I don’t take it lightly. I will give everything I have to these movies and to this role to make it worthy of Suzanne Collins’ masterpiece.”

And though fan reaction has been mixed (see these opinions over at Reelz Channel), Collins herself has already thrown her support behind Lawrence. In an interview with EW, director Gary Ross said Collins saw every audition for Katniss. “To Suzanne, Jen is the perfect realization of the character who is in her head,” Ross said.

E!: Will The Hunger Games Be Awesome? Or Really Not?

Posted by amanda in Mar 18, 2011 with No Comments

A Hunger Games question: We’ve got that girl from Winter’s Bone playing Katniss. But will she actually be starring in a decent movie? I got burned by New Moon and don’t ever want to be in that position again.

—HearstMom4, via the inbox

Understandable. The good news about The Hunger Games is that we won’t get a “heroine” who sits in a chair staring out a window for months when someone makes her sad. (Hi, Bella.)

But will this movie give you enough reasons to clear your schedule for March 23, 2012? Let’s decide right now:

RELATED: Is Jennifer Lawrence right to play Katniss Everdeen?

Probably.

How do I know?

I’ve taken a long look at all the elements, from the screenwriters to the producers to that Jennifer Lawrence, and I have no other choice. Observe:

The source material. Writer Suzanne Collins may have written a rip-off of Battle Royale, but it’s a flaming Hades of a rip-off. The pacing is excellent, and the world, while not exactly the most buyable concept on Earth, is certainly compelling.

We’re talking about children fighting to the death in giant outdoor cage matches, while simultaneously struggling with love triangles and genetically engineered predators. Really. What’s not to love?

EW: ‘Hunger Games’: Is Jennifer Lawrence the Katniss of your dreams?

Posted by amanda in Mar 17, 2011 with No Comments

The recently Oscar-nominated Jennifer Lawrence has been cast in the coveted role of Katniss Everdeen, the teenage heroine of hugely popular Hunger Games trilogy. The book series’ fans have debated (and debated) who would be right for this plum role ever since it was first announced that it would become a movie. And while “act your age” has never been a motto in Hollywood, the land where Botox flows like wine and telling people your age is 30-murmurmurmur is considered acceptable, when it comes to Katniss, age has understandably become a bone of contention with fans.

There’s no doubt that Lawrence proved in last year’s Winter’s Bone not only that she’s a phenomenal new talent, but that she also dirties up nice. Still, the fact remains that she is a fully-grown 20-year-old who will probably be 24 by the time Mockingjay wraps, and some fans think that’s simply too old. Those fans were likely pulling for someone closer to Katniss’ 16 years, like Hailee Steinfeld (aiming under at 14) or  Saoirse Ronan.

On the plus side, Lawrence would hardly be the first person in their twenties to play a teen: Half the high-school students on Friday Night Lights looked about a decade older than the other half, and the average age of The Breakfast Club was around 21. Heck, Gabrielle Carteris was practically in menopause when she finally stopped playing Andrea Zuckerman on Beverly Hills, 90210. And the Hunger Games protagonist probably should look a bit older than her years because, as we all know, oppressive dystopias tend to be pretty harsh on the skin. Another plus, at least for the producers, is that because Lawrence is over 18, they don’t have to worry about child labor laws. In California, minors are required to obey daily caps on work-hours, as well as attend mandated schooling, both of which can eat up potential shooting time. Since production on the film hasn’t even begun, and it’s scheduled to release in a year, I’m sure that must have been a factor.

MTV: ‘Hunger Games’ Casting EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate Confirms Jennifer Lawrence As Katniss

Posted by amanda in Mar 17, 2011 with No Comments

It’s official! Lionsgate confirmed EXCLUSIVELY to MTV News that the odds are ever in Jennifer Lawrence’s favor. After months of speculation, the 20-year-old has scored the lead role in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian drama “The Hunger Games.”

The Oscar-nominated “Winter’s Bone” star beat out more than 30 actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin, for the coveted role of District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen.

“I’m so excited to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life,” said director Gary Ross. “Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.”

Author Suzanne also had nothing but accolades for the young woman portraying her embattled heroine. “Jennifer’s just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we’d find somebody this perfect for the role. And I can’t wait for everyone to see her play it.” (We can’t eilther, Suzanne!)

With the Katniss reaping now complete, the hottest role in Hollywood is undoubtedly that of her fellow Hunger Games competitor Peeta Mellark. A number of actors have met with Lionsgate for the role including Hunter Parrish, Josh Hutcherson, Alex Pettyfer and Liam Hemsworth.
