MTV: ‘Hunger Games’: We Imagine What Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth Will Look Like As Peeta, Gale

Posted by amanda in Apr 21, 2011 with No Comments

Sure, the entirety of this week’s “Hunger Games” casting scoop has been straight out of the secondary character camp, but the movie’s strapping leading men (Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth) are never far from our minds. (Especially after watching “The Last Song” this weekend. Swoony McSwoonerson, Mr. Hemsworth!) ANYWAY, this entire rambling preamble is to tell you that we have a few Peeta/Gale goodies for you today!

You may remember that when Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss last month, we imagined what the actress would look like in five of the District 12 tribute’s signature looks. Well, we’re giving Josh and Liam the same treatment.

We once again turned to fabulous artist Kate Wheeler from Rat Girl Studios to illustrate what the two would look like as a baker’s son and a badass hunter. Check out the results below!

Now, I’ll admit I was among the fans who were a bit…dubious…when these two were cast, but seeing Josh as a blond (and in an apron!) and Liam with longer, shaggier dark hair is helping me see the possibilities.

But what do you think about Josh and Liam in character? Are you sold? Click on the image above to see our entire illustrated “Hunger Games” gallery.

The Hollywood Reporter: ‘Hunger Games’ Star Liam Hemsworth: 5 Things to Know

Posted by amanda in Apr 06, 2011 with No Comments

The Aussie actor just nabbed the buzzy role of Gale in “The Hunger Games.”

Liam Hemsworth, 21, just landed the buzzy role of Gale in the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ sci-fi story The Hunger Games, and here are four things you need to know about him:

1. He got his start in soaps.

After landing spots on Aussie shows like Home and Away and McLeod’s Daughters, he scored his first big role as Josh Taylor, an athletic paraplegic, on the Australian soap opera Neighbours, from 2007 to 2008. He made his U.S debut in the 2009 Nicolas Cage starrer Knowing.

2. Both his brothers act.

He is the younger brother of actors Chris and Luke Hemsworth. Chris even beat out Liam for the role of Thor. Incidentally, Chris was just named CinemaCon’s Male Star of Tomorrow.

3. He’s dated Miley Cyrus.

The two met on the set of 2010′s The Last Song. He even viewed her clan as his second family. “Their whole family’s great,” he once told People. “They’ve always been super friendly to me and very welcoming.” Liam stars in the music video for Miley’s tune “When I Look at You”.

4. He’s over 6′ 4″

According to his imdb.com profile, he is 6′ 4¾” and possesses stunning abs of steel. His physique takes a lot of work: He has said he trains six days a week with surfing, lifting weights and boxing.

5. He’s got more action movies on the way.

In addition to Hunger Games, THR reported Liam is to star in Arabian Nights, Inferno Entertainment’s 3D adventure directed by Chuck Russell. The period epic centers on a young commander (Hemsworth) who, after his king is murdered in a coup, joins forces with Sinbad and Aladdin to rescue Queen Scheherazade.

MTV: Chris Hemsworth As ‘Hunger Games’ Heroine Katniss Everdeen?

Who does “The Last Song” star Liam Hemsworth have to thank for landing the coveted role of Gale Hawthorne in the big-screen adaptation of “The Hunger Games”? (Er, besides his agent, his manager and the studio?) Try “Thor” big brother Chris Hemsworth. No, he didn’t pull any strings or call in any favors. Chris’ contribution was much more subtle—and girly.

When our own Josh Horowitz caught up with the star at WonderCon—just days before little bro Liam landed the plum role—Josh asked Chris what he thought of Liam potentially starring in the biggest YA franchise since “Twilight.” “I’d love him to get it. I think he’s incredibly talented,” Chris said (aw, brotherly love!). “We run all our stuff together and workshop things and talk about it,” he continued. “Any minute now, I think he’s going to launch into something.”

EW: ‘Hunger Games’: Suzanne Collins and Gary Ross talk casting Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth

Posted by amanda in Apr 05, 2011 with No Comments

While the Internet rages with debate over the Hunger Games casting of Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as Peeta and Gale, respectively, the important decision makers, including the books’ author Suzanne Collins, have no doubts. “I was fortunate enough to be in the room with Gary Ross when Josh came in to audition,” said Collins, in a statement. “Three lines into the read I knew he’d be fantastic. Josh totally captured Peeta’s temperament, his sense of humor and his facility for language. I’m thrilled to have him aboard.”

“When I read the book, I thought Peeta would be the hardest role to cast, and I feel so lucky that we found someone who embodies every aspect of such a complex character,” said director Gary Ross. “I can’t wait to work with Josh.”

“Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was on the actor we cast to capture him by showing, not telling,” said producer Nina Jacobs. “This was accomplished so beautifully in Suzanne’s writing, and Liam was able to translate it so naturally to the screen. At the same time, Gale’s journey across the three books transforms him, and Liam’s performance left no doubt that he would take us there.”
