MTV: ‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack: Jennifer Lawrence’s Vocals Confirmed

Posted by amanda in Aug 17, 2011 with No Comments

We’ve seen snippets of the cinematic world of Panem — Jennifer Lawrence as blood-spattered, arrow-wielding Katniss crouching in the woods, Josh Hutcherson as her battle-worn fellow combatant Peeta lying in a clearing. What we haven’t yet checked out from “Hunger Games” — and why would we, with no trailer yet released and the film not hitting theaters until March 2012? — is anything to do with the score, an all-star collaboration between T-Bone Burnett and Danny Elfman.

But that musical omission will be changing soon, as Burnett not only told MTV News that filmmakers will be releasing “Hunger Games” tuneage soon, but that one track will feature Lawrence herself.

“Yeah, we did,” Burnett said when we asked if Lawrence had recorded anything in the studio. “And it was beautiful. She did great. She’s singing great. Killer actor too.”

Burnett’s confirmation follows a blog post in June from the website of Echo Mountain Recording Studio in North Carolina, detailing Burnett’s in-studio work with Lawrence. The post has since been deleted and Lawrence’s musical contribution has not been confirmed. After our chat with Burnett on Tuesday at the “Big Lebowski” reunion in New York, though (spoiler alert), we know the 21-year-old actress in fact recorded “Rue’s Lullaby,” a song Katniss sings after Rue, a young tribute in the Games, is mortally wounded.

THE HUNGER GAMES SCORES T BONE BURNETT AND DANNY ELFMAN

Santa Monica, CA, June 28, 2011– LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF), a leading global entertainment company, today announced an unprecedented film music collaboration between Academy Award® winner and two time nominee T Bone Burnett (CRAZY HEART, COLD MOUNTAIN) and four time Academy Award® nominated composer Danny Elfman (ALICE IN WONDERLAND, SPIDER-MAN) on the music for the highly anticipated film adaptation of THE HUNGER GAMES, based on the first in Suzanne Collins’s runaway bestselling book trilogy.  The announcement was made by Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group President Joe Drake.

Elfman and Burnett will be collaborating on the film score, with Burnett also serving as the film’s Executive Music Producer, producing songs for the film and soundtrack.

Said Lionsgate’s Head of Film Music Tracy McKnight of the musical dream team assembled on behalf of the film, “THE HUNGER GAMES is such a special property – it has worldwide mass appeal, but it’s also sophisticated, cerebral, soulful, and rebellious.  We needed a composer who can translate these qualities musically, and we have not one but two incredible artists in an absolutely thrilling first time ever collaboration.”

Production president Alli Shearmur is overseeing the production for the studio, and the deals for both artists were negotiated by McKnight with Lenny Wohl, EVP Business Affairs Music & Publishing, on behalf of Lionsgate.

Examiner: Jennifer Lawrence may have recorded song for ’The Hunger Games’ movie

Posted by amanda in Jun 16, 2011 with No Comments

When you hear reports that Jennifer Lawrence was brought in “to sing a haunting song” that’s allegedly for The Hunger Games, fans immediately think of one thing: Rue’s lullaby.

According to Echo Mountain Recording, T. Bone Burnett is the music supervisor for The Hunger Games, and he recently flew in to North Carolina to work on some of the music for the movie. One of the songs he worked on, Echo Mountain Recording says, was a “haunting song” in which he brought in Jennifer Lawrence to sing.

Spoilers ahead, if you haven’t read The Hunger Games — but as fans know, Katniss (Lawrence’s character) sings to Rue when the younger girl is dying. The song is a haunting lullaby, with lyrics such as:

Deep in the meadow, under the willow

A bed of grass, a soft green pillow

Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes

And when again they open, the sun will rise.

The song comes from one of the book’s most emotionally charged scenes, so fans will be glad to hear that the lullaby is likely to be included.

It’s also exciting to hear that T. Bone Burnett is working on music for The Hunger Games. He has an impressive resume, and his past work includes films such as Crazy Heart, Across the Universe, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Cold Mountain, and Walk the Line.
