Examiner: Hundreds show up for ’The Hunger Games’ rumored open casting call

Posted by amanda in Apr 17, 2011 with No Comments

Hundreds turned out this weekend to an open casting call for The Hunger Games movie (allegedly, at least) in North Carolina.

On Saturday, teens and adults hoping to be an extra in “Artemis” — the rumored working title for The Hunger Games — lined up at the Cleveland Mall in Shelby, NC.

One hopeful, Amy S., shared her experience exclusively with Hunger Games Examiner.

She arrived at the casting call early, and already there were hundreds waiting in line — mostly, she observed, teens. Amy says herself and others in line waited patiently as the casting process began around 10 a.m. on Saturday.

“Once my turn came up, I met with a very nice woman who I gave my form and my photo,” Amy said. “She asked me my name and we chatted for a second about where I’m from. She sort of gave me a once over and looked at my photo — thankfully she was very complimentary and said ‘”very nice.’ She also asked if I had ever done anything like this before and I told her I hadn’t but I’d always wanted to.”

Amy says that was pretty much it for the casting call. After that, she dropped off her form and photo in a basket for her age group and gender — as directed — and went home.

Amy’s understanding is that she’ll learn whether she’s been selected as an extra within the next few weeks.

“The whole process was very quick and straightforward and a lot more organized than I had expected,” Amy said.

News outlets in North Carolina also covered the casting process, though Lionsgate still has not confirmed publicly whether “Artemis” really is the working title for The Hunger Games or not.

Another casting call is being held Sunday, and another casting call has been listed for Thursday afternoon in Fort Mill, SC.

Examiner: Rumored open casting call for ’The Hunger Games’ movie this weekend in NC

Posted by amanda in Apr 11, 2011 with No Comments

It looks like filmmakers for The Hunger Games are, indeed, moving forward with plans to film the movie adaptation in and around North Carolina. The latest proof is in an alleged casting call for “Artemis,” the rumored working title for The Hunger Games movie.

The casting call was posted on a new Facebook page called “Artemis Casting Calls,” and seeks extras of all ages, but in particular children ages 12-18 and adults “with interesting character faces,” (which sounds a bit like a need for Capitol citizens). The casting call was also posted on the Facebook page for Tona B. Dahlquist Casting, which is based in South Carolina.

As listed on the Facebook page, here is information for the two open casting calls:

Saturday, April 16, 2011 Casting Call

10 AM – 1 PM

Cleveland Mall  (Off Hwy. 74)

2001- 53 E Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152

Sunday,  April 17, 2011 Casting Call

12:30 PM – 3:30 PM

Carolina Mall  (Exit 58 off I -85)

480 Concord Pkwy North, Concord, NC  28025

Of course, NONE of this information has been confirmed by Lionsgate.

Anyone thinking of showing up to the casting call should remember that legitimate casting agencies will NEVER charge you money for an audition. (For more tips on avoiding casting scams, check out casting director Lana Veenker’s blog, The Casting Scoop. She has lots of very sound advice.)

Thanks to The Hob, which originally spotted the casting call on Facebook.

Examiner: ’The Hunger Games’ among 2010’s most challenged library books

Posted by amanda in Apr 11, 2011 with No Comments

For the first time, Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games has made the American Library Association’s top ten list of most challenged books — landing at number 5 on this year’s list.

Though fans of The Hunger Games fans may find this shocking, it’s not so surprising to Collins herself.

“I’ve read in passing that people were concerned about the level of violence in the books,” Collins has said. “That’s not unreasonable. They are violent. It’s a war trilogy.”

It’s also become something of a badge of honor for many authors and publishers to have their books added to this list. In the past, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight books have also been named on the list, along with perennially challenged classics such as Catcher in the Rye and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Examiner: ’The Hunger Games’ producer Nina Jacobson says she was ’obsessed’ with the books

Posted by amanda in Apr 10, 2011 with No Comments

When she first read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Hollywood producer Nina Jacobson says she was “obsessed with the book and with the idea that I had to produce the movie.”

That obsession became a reality, and Jacobson’s company Color Force is now the team behind Lionsgate’s upcoming adaptation of The Hunger Games.

Jacobson tells Forbes magazine that she was one of several producers seeking the rights to The Hunger Games. But something about Jacobson’s passion convinced author Collins to hand over the film rights to her.

“She felt extraordinarily passionate about the material,” Collins said. “She had the same fears that I did about the ways it could be misused.”

Now, Jacobson has teamed up with Lionsgate to produce The Hunger Games movie, due out in theaters on March 23, 2012 — less than a year from now. Filmmakers have already cast the film’s three main leads, and are scouting filming locations to begin shooting in the next few months.

EW: Team ‘Hunger Games’ talks: Author Suzanne Collins and director Gary Ross on their allegiance to each other, and their actors — EXCLUSIVE

Posted by amanda in Apr 07, 2011 with No Comments

The Hunger Games best-selling author Suzanne Collins and director Gary Ross always figured they’d respect each other well enough. Ross was a passionate fan of her best-selling trilogy; Collins really dug his past films (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville). What they didn’t anticipate was how much they’d instantly trust each other’s vision, to the point where the two were soon meeting for long-past-midnight script writing sessions. In this exclusive conversation with EW, they describe the joy of becoming unexpectedly fierce collaborators throughout every aspect of pre-production — and that includes casting. For all those fans out there who’ve howled with rage and dismay over recent casting announcements, Ross and Collins insist they’ve found the perfect people to bring Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) fully to life. They’ve got their actors’ backs, just as they have each other’s. (Note: SPOILER WARNING — major plot details are discussed below!)

Hollywood Life: Are ‘The Hunger Games’ Stars The New Rob, Kristen & Taylor?

Posted by amanda in Apr 04, 2011 with No Comments

Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence are now the leading stars of a film trilogy based on a book series with a cult-like following … sound familiar? I think we’re looking at the next Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart!

As sad as it makes us, the Twilight films are rapidly coming to a close — but luckily the void Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart leave in our hearts when the second Breaking Dawn movie comes out will now be filled by The Hunger Games cast. HollywoodLifers, we present to you Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence – aka your next favorite love triangle!

Although The Hunger Games is considered sci-fi and the Twilight series is definitely fantasy, we can’t help but compare the two. In The Hunger Games, Jennifer will play Katniss, who is conflicted by her feelings for both Gale (Liam) and Peeta (Josh), much like Kristen’s Bella loves both Edward (Robert) and Jacob (Taylor) … but in different ways.

Plus, from a business stand point, The Hunger Games are going to be epic in a way only the Twilight franchise can compare. We foresee dolls, clothes, popular soundtracks and much, much more!

How do YOU feel about Liam and Josh being cast as Peeta and Gale? Do YOU think they were right for the roles? Sound off below!
